General orthopaedics and robotic joint replacement

Mr Richard Kjar is an Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Wangaratta, Victoria. He is the Clinical Director – Orthopaedics at Northeast Health Wangaratta. Mr Kjar works in both the public and private hospital systems, providing general orthopaedic surgical services.

Robotic joint replacement

Mr Kjar has broad experience in robotic-assisted hip, knee and shoulder replacement, including complex and revision surgery, with more than 1,000 robotic cases and over 4,000 joint replacements performed in total. He uses an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) approach, designed to help patients get moving sooner and return home earlier after joint replacement.

Upper and lower limb surgery

Mr Kjar also performs general orthopaedic surgery, including hand, elbow, shoulder, knee, foot and ankle surgery.

Trauma and fractures

Mr Kjar has considerable expertise in orthopaedic trauma management. Patients requiring trauma care are managed by Northeast Health Wangaratta’s orthopaedic trauma service, where Mr Kjar is part of the Orthopaedic Unit’s on-call roster.

Training

After gaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007, Mr Kjar completed further training in complex hip and knee replacement in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, under Dr Michael Dunbar in 2008. He became a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association in 2010.

Combining his overseas experience with his local training, Mr Kjar keeps his skills at the forefront of modern orthopaedic care through regular education and training. He aims to provide high-quality surgical treatment, coupled with genuine care and concern for his patients.

Outside the hospital

Mr Kjar lives locally and is married with two children. He loves the outdoors, with interests in farming, mountain and gravel biking, trail running and telemark skiing.

Referral and X-ray from your GPBefore we can book your appointment, we'll need a valid referral and a recent plain X-ray of the affected area. Please ask your GP to send both to Mr Kjar's Rooms electronically. We'll let you know if any further imaging is needed.

Private health fund, WorkCover insurer or TAC claim details, if applicable
Details of where any relevant X-rays, ultrasounds, MRI, bone or CT scans were done. You don't need to bring the films themselves, as Mr Kjar can usually view these digitally. Please check with reception if you are unsure.

Public and private patients

Mr Kjar sees both public and private patients in his Rooms. A consultation fee applies, and Medicare rebates will cover part of this fee.

Public patients: if surgery is needed, you will be placed on a waiting list and the surgery will be performed at Northeast Health Wangaratta or Yarrawonga Health, with no surgical fees.

Private patients: surgery is performed at Wangaratta Private Hospital using your private health insurance. There may be out-of-pocket costs and a gap payment, which we'll discuss with you at your appointment.
